MEET EMILY SIMA ~ At 12 years of age she is talented, responsible and ready to baby-sit!!!

As editor of the paper I receive a LOT of mail. Few pieces however stand out as much as the one I received from young Emily Sima.

_______________________________________________________________________

Hello my name is Emily Sima.  I'm a certified babysitter and have been taught Basic First Aid by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.  I have also been taught how to defend myself and others in case someone wants to kidnap me.  The group that taught me was called "RAD Kids."

So truly yours,
Emily Sima

Obviously I wasted no time in telling her that it was my sincerest hope that she would NEVER have to put her RAD KID skills to use! J Truth be told however is that Emily was quite serious in her abilities to defend herself. Having participated in a program called RAD KIDS she felt well prepared to take on any adverse circumstance that might come her way. Now intrigued by her comments and wanting to learn more about this young super hero I quickly responded with a thirst for more information. The comments below were Emily’s responses to my Q&A in an attempt to get to know her better. I hope you will enjoy ready her comments as much as I did in communicating with her.

Emily,

I would certainly hope that no one would want to kidnap you! J In any case I am assuming you would like your info added to the Heights service directory in our neighborhood newspaper? I am happy to do that. Can you tell me how old you are?

There is no charge to teens for this listing however if you choose to have a phone number listed on the web site we would need signed parental permission for that.

Maybe you could also email me a story on your experiences with the “Rad Kids” program- what you got out of it, why it was important to you and how others can find out more about it. If possible send a picture of yourself as well and we can put that in the paper- it might help you gain some added exposure for your babysitting. Thanks again!

                                                ~ Emily Sima, age 12~

~ Do you have siblings? If so what are their ages?

Yes, I have two brothers.  I have a brother who is 27, his name is Caleb.  And I have another brother who just turned 9, his name is Andrew.

~ Why babysitting and what do you like most about it?

I haven't started babysitting yet, because I just got my license.  And I'd like to start babysitting because I love to play and hang out with kids younger than me.  And this is a way for me to have fun with younger kids, a lot more often.  And I think I'm ready for the challenges and responsibility of babysitting.

~ How long have you lived in the Heights?

4/15/1998 (can’t forget tax day- according to Dad)  Ever since I was 3.  We moved here from Ocala because my dad wanted a job with retirement benefits and went to work at the VA Hospital.  My mom was pregnant with Andrew at that time.  We moved in to our house the week after Andrew was born.

~ How did you hear about Rad Kids and when did you take the classes?

My dad works at the VA where they offered classes last summer.

~ What interested you most about these classes?

My parents were interested in us learning stranger danger and how to protect ourselves against possible abduction or attacks.  We liked it because we got to fight against adults!

~ Have you ever had a real occasion to use these skills?

No, Thank goodness!  But I am sometimes bullied at school and this class taught me how to respond to that. I also learned lots of stuff I am able to use everyday, like avoiding strangers, phone etiquette and avoiding drugs and alcohol.

~ What do you like to do when you are not babysitting or going to school?

I take  Musical Theatre classes at Maltz Theatre and  am in the Touring Company.  I also take voice lessons with Craig Wich.

~ Any plans for when you grow up? If so what?

Yes.  I want to be an actress.

~ Any specials plans for this summer?

I am taking a Musical Theatre Conservatory class for  3 weeks at Maltz Theatre and am then going to Hawaii for 1 month to help take care of my grandma.

~ Anything else that is interesting or special that you would like to share with me?

I am in 6th grade theatre major at BAK Middle School of the Arts.

Ms. Shepherd,

Rad Kids had a very orderly way to do things.  We had to show them our power rather than being afraid.  We had to fight one of our teachers there.  He wore lots of big, bright pads all over his body, so we can use all of our power to get away from his reach.  Yet most of the time we had to yell and scream and even hit the teachers, they still wanted us to get to know everybody really well during the rad kids class.  Although we learned all of the good technique they don't have the classes anymore.  But you can find out more about rad kids at  http://radkids.org/

~Emily’s Mom however sensed my disappointment in the derailment of the RAD KID program and quickly came to the rescue with some additional comments. According to Mom (Angela Sima) the RAD KIDS program is a wonderful program that needs additional instructors in our area. From what she had to say the program is available around the country with many programs within our own state. Unfortunately Palm Beach County had only 2 instructors, both of which had to give up the program because of conflicts in their schedules. She asked that I stress the importance of this program in hopes that it might generate additional interest along the way. While RAD KIDS may have vacated the Palm Beach area other opportunities for babysitting training do still exist. Emily recently completed a 1 ½ hour baby sitting course that was held at our local library and she also received a certificate from the Palm Beach Fire Rescue for Basic First Aid. Mom claims she loves to take advantage of all the free opportunities offered throughout our community. Emily’s parents admit that her experiences with babysitting are limited thus far. No worry there however as Mom willing acknowledges that until Emily is ready to baby-sit on her own, she will be close at hand just in case there is an emergency. Besides being Emily’s mom she is also a nurse and takes care of sick and premature babies at St. Marys Hospital. Qualifications few babysitters have the pleasure of! Finally Angela went on state that Emily wasn’t all muscle and no brain- she also was an “Honor Roll” student at BAK where she is pursuing an acting career. This past fall she danced in the Holiday Revue Touring Company where they performed at Downtown in the Gardens. “Emily also appears on the front cover of the Maltz Theatre Children’s Institutes Brochure” she commented. (Pretty cool according to Mom J ).
